Spencer Bivens
Spencer Bivens Logs first win of 2025
Sat, Apr 5, 2025, 10:26 AM
Bivens (1-1) allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out one over two innings, earning the win in Friday's 10-9 extra-innings victory over the Mariners.
Analysis: Bivens entered Friday's matchup in the 10th frame, allowing a walk but no runs. The 30-year-old began the 11th inning by inducing a groundout, but he gave up a line-drive single to center field and subsequently walked the next batter, loading the bases with one out. The Mariners took a 9-8 lead after Bivens allowed the automatic runner to score on a wild pitch, though he escaped the frame with no earned runs. The right-handed reliever picked up the win after Willy Adames' two-run, walk-off single that sealed the game in the 11th. Bivens has made three appearances this season, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three over 3.2 innings.
Lou Trivino
Lou Trivino Gives up first homer of 2025
Sat, Apr 5, 2025, 10:17 AM
Trivino allowed a home run and an additional run on two hits and two walks while striking out one over one inning in Friday's 10-9 extra-innings win over the Mariners.
Analysis: Trivino entered Friday's matchup with a 5-3 lead in the fifth frame, allowing a walk before giving up a two-out, two-run shot to right field by Jorge Polanco. Additionally, Trivino gave up a single and walked another batter, finishing with 17 strikes on 30 pitches. The 33-year-old struggled Friday, though he was perfect in his first two relief appearances, striking out one and recording a hold over two innings.
Camilo Doval
Camilo Doval Logs blown save vs. Seattle
Sat, Apr 5, 2025, 10:11 AM
Doval allowed three runs on three hits while striking out one over one inning, picking up a blown save during Friday's 10-9 extra-innings win over the Mariners.
Analysis: Doval entered Friday's game with a 6-5 lead in the sixth frame and struck out the first batter he faced. The 27-year-old followed the strikeout by allowing two singles, with both runners stealing a base and later being driven in by Cal Raleigh. Raleigh reached second base on a fielding error by Tyler Fitzgerald, then stole third before scoring on an RBI single by Jorge Polanco. On the bright side, Doval escaped the inning with no earned runs, though he hadn't given up a hit before allowing the three singles on Friday. The right-handed reliever has made four appearances this season, recording a 0.75 WHIP, no earned runs and a 2:0 K:BB across four frames.
Patrick Bailey
Patrick Bailey Two doubles in three-hit game
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 10:37 PM
Bailey went 3-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored in Friday's 10-9 extra-innings win over the Mariners.
Analysis: Bailey had gone 0-for-9 across his previous five games. The 25-year-old is seeing a majority of the playing time behind the plate over Sam Huff while Tom Murphy (back) is on the 60-day injured list. Bailey hit .234 with a .637 OPS over 121 games in 2024, so while the steady playing time is nice, the rest of his offensive production is pretty standard for a catcher. He's also a reigning Gold Glove winner, so his strong defense will afford him some leeway through slumps with the bat.
Heliot Ramos
Heliot Ramos Gets aboard four times in win
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 10:32 PM
Ramos went 3-for-5 with a walk, one RBI, a stolen base and one run scored in Friday's 10-9 extra-innings win over the Mariners.
Analysis: Ramos has opened the season hot with a seven-game hitting streak. This was his second multi-hit effort, and he's now batting .323 with three homers, three doubles, eight RBI, six runs scored and two stolen bases. The one concern is his 1:12 BB:K -- a lofty strikeout rate could lower his ceiling over time. For now, it's just a small-sample issue, and it's not a particularly big one with how well he's making contact when he's not striking out.
LaMonte Wade Jr.
LaMonte Wade Jr. Three extra-base hits Friday
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 10:27 PM
Wade went 3-for-6 with a triple, two doubles, one walk, two RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 10-9 extra-innings win over the Mariners.
Analysis: Wade was 0-for16 over his first five games of the season, but it looks like his bat is waking up. He has four extra-base hits over the last two contests -- he hit his home run Wednesday in Houston and showed off with a strong game atop the order Friday. Power isn't necessarily a huge part of his playing style. He slugged just .381 last season, but he got on base at a .380 clip thanks to a 15.8 percent walk rate. Wade will likely function as a strong-side platoon option at first base for the bulk of 2025, and his on-base skills position him well as a leadoff option in that role.
Willy Adames
Willy Adames Plays hero Friday
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 10:21 PM
Adames went 3-for-7 with a double, three RBI, one stolen base and one run scored in Friday's 10-9 extra-innings win over the Mariners.
Analysis: Adames hit an RBI double in the fifth inning to give the Giants a 6-5 lead. That was one of many twists and turns in the game, which ended with his two-run, walk-off single in the 11th. He doubled his hit total for the season and is now batting .200 (6-for-30) with six RBI and three runs scored over seven contests. Adames also logged his first steal of the campaign, and he could be a contributor with his speed after a career-high 21 thefts in 2024 with the Brewers.
Matt Chapman
Matt Chapman Goes yard Friday
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 10:18 PM
Chapman went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional RBI and two walks in Friday's 10-9 extra-innings win over the Mariners.
Analysis: Chapman was one of five Giants with multiple hits in the contest, earning his first multi-hit effort of the season. The third baseman is batting .280 with two homers, six RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base over seven contests. He's added a 5:9 BB:K as well. Chapman should continue to handle a near-everyday role after topping 150 games played in three of the previous four seasons. He is locked in as the Giants' cleanup hitter so far.
Justin Verlander
Justin Verlander Short outing versus Mariners
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 10:14 PM
Verlander allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 2.1 innings, taking a no-decision in Friday's extra-innings win over the Mariners.
Analysis: Both teams dipped into their bullpens early, and the Giants had to because Verlander wasn't pitching well early on. He threw 44 of 65 pitches for strikes but gave up a solo home run to Julio Rodriguez in the first inning and got in more trouble in the third. The veteran right-hander's first year with the Giants is off to a mediocre beginning -- he's allowed five runs, 11 hits and three walks while striking out seven over 7.1 innings across two starts. He's tentatively scheduled for a home start versus the Reds next week.
Hayden Birdsong
Hayden Birdsong Makes first appearance of 2025
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 1:50 PM
Birdsong threw two scoreless innings during Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Astros, allowing two hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Analysis: Birdsong made his first appearance of 2025 and was the last member of the Opening Day roster to play this season. The right-handed reliever started the sixth frame and later got out of a two-out jam. He walked the first batter of the seventh inning before retiring the Astros' next three hitters, finishing with 26 pitches across two innings. Birdsong was neck-and-neck with Landen Roupp for the fifth-starter role in spring training before being moved to the bullpen. However, the Giants' early success has made it more difficult to utilize the 23-year-old Birdsong, who made 16 starts last season, registering a 4.75 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 88:43 K:BB over 72 innings.
Camilo Doval
Camilo Doval Secures second save of 2025
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 10:21 PM
Doval earned the save in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Astros, pitching a scoreless inning with no strikeouts.
Analysis: Doval induced three consecutive outs in just 10 pitches during the ninth frame, securing his second save in three appearances this season. The right-hander has yet to allow a hit across three innings in the 2025 campaign, recording a strikeout and no walks. Ryan Walker took over the closing role due to Doval's struggles in the middle of last season, and while Walker will likely continue to receive the bulk of the ninth-inning work, Doval should still remain a key part of the back-end mix in the bullpen.
LaMonte Wade Jr.
LaMonte Wade Jr. Belts first home run of 2025
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 9:36 PM
Wade went 1-for-1 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Astros.
Analysis: Wade began the game on the bench against left-handed pitcher Framber Valdez, with Casey Schmitt receiving the starting nod at first base. However, Wade pinch hit for Schmitt in the eighth frame, giving the Giants a three-run lead with a 364-foot solo shot off right-hander Ryan Gusto. The homer also marked Wade's first hit on the season. The 31-year-old has struggled to start the 2025 campaign, slashing .059/.056/.235 with two RBI and five strikeouts across 19 plate appearances.
Luis Matos
Luis Matos Cracks first homer of 2025
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 9:26 PM
Matos went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Astros.
Analysis: Matos drew the start in center field due to Jung Hoo Lee getting the night off against southpaw Framber Valdez. Matos cracked a 395-foot solo shot to left field in the second frame, which landed just above the yellow line and was initially ruled a double. The 23-year-old outfielder is expected to continue facing lefties, and in three outings this season, he's slashing .400/.455/.800 across 11 plate appearances.
Landen Roupp
Landen Roupp Posts career-high eight strikeouts
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 6:32 PM
Roupp didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against Houston after allowing three runs on four hits and four walks in four innings. He struck out eight.
Analysis: While Roupp did hand out four free passes that drove up his pitch count to 83, he did fan a career-high eight Wednesday. A Yordan Alvarez single in the fifth inning resulted in two of his earned runs, both of which came as inherited runners while the right-hander was in the dugout after failing to record an out in the frame. Roupp doesn't figure to have a long leash as a starter, with Hayden Birdsong looming in the bullpen, but he tentatively lines up for a softer matchup at home against the Reds early next week.
Willy Adames
Willy Adames Settling into No. 2 spot
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 1:18 PM
Adames will start at shortstop and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Astros, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: After inking a $182 million deal in free agency this winter, Adames has quickly found a home in the No. 2 spot in the lineup, batting out of that spot in the order in each of the Giants' first six games. Though the Giants head into Wednesday's contest with a 4-1 record, Adames hasn't played a big role in the team's early success thus far; he's slashing just .158/.190/.211 with three RBI and one run.
Christian Koss
Christian Koss Makes MLB debut Tuesday
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 12:36 PM
Koss went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Astros.
Analysis: Koss drew the start at second base during his big-league debut. The 27-year-old reached first on a walk in the third frame and displayed his speed by scoring from first on a two-run double by Willy Adames. Koss is expected to operate as a utility infielder for the Giants this season, though he's a candidate to receive playing time in the outfield as well, per Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Casey Schmitt
Casey Schmitt Starting at first Wednesday
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 12:22 PM
Giants manager Bob Melvin said that Schmitt will start at first base against left-handed pitcher Framber Valdez in Wednesday's game versus the Astros, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: The 26-year-old Schmitt pinch hit for LaMonte Wade against lefty Steven Okert in the seventh inning of Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Astros. Schmitt remained in the game and played first base for the first time in his big-league career, though he went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. There's a good chance that Schmitt will receive more playing time at first base against lefties moving forward, and he's been taking grounders with Wade and Wilmer Flores to familiarize himself with the position.
LaMonte Wade Jr.
LaMonte Wade Jr. Not in lineup against southpaw
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 12:17 PM
Wade is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game in Houston.
Analysis: Left-hander Framber Valdez will start for the Astros, so the lefty-hitting Wade will begin the series finale on the bench. Casey Schmitt will fill in at first base and bat fifth.
Jung Hoo Lee
Jung Hoo Lee Sitting versus lefty
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 12:15 PM
Lee is out of the lineup for Wednesday's tilt in Houston, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Lee will get his first day off of the season after reaching base eight times in his first five games. Luis Matos will start in center field and bat sixth Wednesday versus left-hander Framber Valdez.
Patrick Bailey
Patrick Bailey Out of lineup Wednesday
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 12:13 PM
Bailey is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game in Houston.
Analysis: It's a routine day off for Bailey, who will yield to Sam Huff at catcher. The switch-hitting Bailey is only 1-for-12 at the plate in his first five contests this season.
